I want to go running with an MP3 player that allows me to operate a scroll wheel to slow down or speed up the music, without changing the pitch -- so the beat of the music matches my pace.

I had this feature on a walkman years ago, and it was great. The variable-speed technology is available in other devices, esp. CD players, so extending it to MP3 players should be no big deal. The market is the millions of people who like to exercise to music, and want the music to help them stick to their pace.

I have a new hard-disk based MP3 jukebox, which is really a little computer. I'd like the option of throwing a switch, that would cause the jukebox to voice-synthesize the title and/or composer of the next song, like a minimalist DJ. "One For My Baby" [music starts].

Square dance callers have been using MP3s for a while, and having a variable speed player would enable them to adjust the speed for the dancers, as some songs may be a bit fast/slow for comfortable dancing. Great idea!

This feature has existed in MP3 players since the days before ipods even existed. You just need to stop buying crap mp3 players :-)

If you have a crap mp3 player and don't want to buy another, check out if Rockbox supports your player. It's replacement firmware, there are versions of it for many mp3 players (including ipods) and while I'm not sure if it pitch-corrects worth a damn, it does allow you to adjust the playing speed.
