If plastic buttons were made with a dull pin extending from the rear, a small clamp that would attach to the end of the pin after the pin was pushed through the cloth would fix the button in place quickly and with minimum trouble to replace a lost button and save the nuisance of sewing.

I'm all in favor of a quick button fix. It is very annoying when the button comes off of a pair of pants or shorts. These perfectly good clothes sit for months because I hate sewing and so does my wife. I would love to have a quick snap on button repair device.
hi sand, how about buttons made of magenets or hidden under cloth.
Another advantage of such a system would be that you could easily move a button to a slightly different spot to adjust the fit of the garment. Don't you hate it when your pants waistband is a little too tight or loose because the button isn't in quite the right spot?
After thinking about this idea for a minute, it occurred to me that it might be better to have the pin on the piece that goes on the back of the fabric and make the button the clamp. It would be easier that way to make the back piece, which is against your body, flat and safe. It doesn't matter so much if it sticks out a bit on the outside.
