Okay, really, this is a bit silly, but when you're the last one up at night, burning the midnight oil or whatever and you want to heat up a cup of tea or something in the microwave, the house is all quiet until you hit the buttons BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

Well, how 'bout a little button called MUTE or something...

You press that button and then when you press the next buttons (cook type, minutes, seconds) no sound is made. When the cooking cycle is done, no ending beep is made, but maybe the light in the microwave slowly blinks on and off a couple of times or something.

The mute button would only work on the cycle that took place right after pressing it, (each time you wanted no beeping, you'd just press the MUTE button first) so it wouldn't affect the normal (daytime beep hearing) users.

The microwave I have can be set for the buttons to sound or not sound. It's not ad hoc - it turns the tone on/off it until the setting is changed. Since this is a new microwave, perhaps this is the trend of the future. It must have been annoying a lot of people!

The microwave that I use does not have a mute or Sound on/off button. It is very annoying and when my baby is sleeping it wakes her up when the Microwave makes those 4 beeps. It would be nice to have the mute button as "Jack" was pointing out. Better yet, have a set of configurable options with Mute, Number of beeps (eg: only give 2 beeps), beep volume control, food done beeps etc. Ofcourse the higher end models might have all these features already!

Yeah, the one device that usual works in less than two minues always want to BEEP in case I forget. Look, I am cooking something to eat it -- the odds that I'll forget are really raelly low. And the volume on the key-press... yep, 1/4 would do it. I'm standing right there!

Our microwave does this. The sound level button lets you press 0 to 3. Zero is mute. Only problem is you have to press two buttons (beep beep) to get it to mute. Otherwise, it has been a Godsend over the years. It's a GE Profile Performance circa 1998-ish.

About 10 years ago I wrote to Panasonic complaining about this. Their LAWYERS replied, thinking it was an idea for an invention ! My intent was to chastise their designers for adding the annoying 'beep'. I would still like to lock the 'pro-beep' engineers in a room for a few hours with their confounded beeps chirping away.
