slightly redundant sheet music | |||||||||||||||||
when I informally sight read sheet music for piano (Xmas carols) or guitar, it sure would be nice if they repeated the last two measures of music from the bottom of one page to the top of the other. The repeated measures could be set off with grey scale background to indicate that it is to help those of us who are trying to play continuously but are slow at turning the page.

Since I have no musical training I am unfamiliar with the field but this problem might be amenable to another solution. If sheet music were transferred to a CD Rom it could offer a very wide range of music very compactly. A reader with a flat screen that could be placed on a piano or on a stand before another type of instrument player and could be set to scroll at the player's desired rate would, it seems to me, be very convenient. Also it might incorporate capabilities for larger text or to return in programmed increments at any point to replay for practice or re-examination of a piece.
Or have the screen device connected (wirelessly perhaps), to the conductors unit, so he/she sets the pace.
I think this is a great idea. However what I have never understood is why you can't have an automatic page-turner. It could be very simply but it would need to be operated by a foot pedal since instruments usually require both hands.

This is a good idea that could usefully have been thought of centuries ago. Not only is page turning a major issue when reading music, but seeing the current measure in the context of the immediately preceding music is very important.
A further refinement would be: instead of binding all the pages to the book spine, arrange a sequence of pages in a fold-out pattern so that several can be seen at a time. Print the remaining pages of the piece (or the next piece) in sequence on the reverse page sides, using the redundancy idea. Multiple unfolding sections could be bound together. Of course, I would prefer the midi-driven or foot-controlled flat screen music reader that so many musicians always wish for.
First, some background. I own Quicksand Technologies (cuurently called Gitarre Spielen -- a name change is in the works) which makes a product called Guitar Sidekick. It's a sheet music creator and much much more. With that out of the way...Ian: I love the idea! We will definitely add this as a print option relatively soon to our software. We have a new version, 4.1, that will soon be out. We will try to squeeze this feature into that release. If not, it will, without question, be in 4.2. Excellent idea! I hope you enjoy the software, especially after your idea is implemented.Classicsat: A product like this actually already exists, but Harry Connick Jr. owns a patent on it.
