Microwave ovens are nice in that they use minimum power and cook food more or less evenly but some foods like baked goods and roasted meats are more appetizing with a crust that requires heating more intense on the exterior than the interior. If there were a combination microwave and grill, the best of each could be taken advantage of by first quickly cooking the food evenly and then using radiated heat to create a crust.

I have one sitting in the shed. Has a broiler element on top.1970s vintage. I believe GE has one now that uses a halogen heat source.

a "convection microwave" does the same thing. Several years ago I had a Sharp Carousel II convection microwave that had several heating modes, among them a "combined" microwave and convection mode, where food was simultaneously heated and browned. Figure paying twice the price for a convection microwave. You can get them with 1200 watts, turntable, broiling element, 2.0 cubic foot cavity... GE also has the Advantium, which I think uses a halogen radiant source. It's also pricey. I may get one if the price ever drops.

This kind of combination oven is very common in Europe. Most homes have only a 'Combi' (as they call them). They ahve sufficient space to cook a medium roast, and do so in have the time. Plus they are much more space effecient than a full oven and a microwave, which is perfect for smaller European kitchens. If you search the internet you can find these products on UK websites but so far I have been unsuccessful in find one in NA. I am renovating my kitchen and would like to put on in!

Kitchen Aid offers an oven that is a microwave/convection/radiant heat oven. They call it Ultima cook. It can be used as only a microwave or as a convection or combination. The combination uses the microwave and the heat to cook food quickly and it can use the microwave/radiant to give it the browning effect.

My last survey here in Helsinki indicated that most new microwave models include a grill.
