There should be a company/service that takes old clothes and will turn it into a quilt.

Why?

People have old clothes that they keep, but don't wear b/c they're outdated, outgrown, damaged (rip, stain, hole in spot). Some packrats simply can't move on and their closets get jammed with stuff they don't wear.

Or someone without sewing skill wants to create a quilt by from a bunch of Hawaiian shirts maybe, or college shirts, or sports team shirts.

It would be a great way to re-use otherwise useless garments.

You could send a box of clothes and $100 and get back a one of a kind quilt that has some meaning to you, clears out your closet, keeps you warm, saves resources and maybe presrves memories.

It is a good idea, however, if you have never sewed before there are some things you should know. The materials detiorate (sp?) and so they need to be examined to make sure they will hold together. The materials should be of the same weight, you need to know that silk and denim will be hard to wash later. Finally, the cost is gonna be more than $100 because to cut and sew and back all of those little pieces is very time consuming. If you go to buy a handmade quilt at a store, it will be in the hundreds because it took some time to put it together.

This is just a question of marketing and economics.

Marketing - make people aware of the idea, get them to buy into it.

Economics - quilting is very labour intensive. A quilt will only be affordable if the clothes are shipped to say China or Afganistan and the quilt shipped back.

(A while ago I looked at hand knitted to order jumpers, and lacework, with the workers being based in Eastern Europe, mainly old ladies with little income. The economics worked, but I found something more exciting and more in my line so didn't pursue).

Maybe a charity running refugee camps could act as middleman, and then also people get the feelgood of knowing that they are directly helping the poorest people.

good idea. there is nothing opposing anyone should say about this idea. especially if you are making it by yourself. i would love a quilt of all my old clothes that are too small ripped etc... i have so many skateboarding and oldies rock, it would even be better if i had saved all the shirts i grew up wearing, that would be so special because it means something, its one of a kind there is one person it matches by how they dressed through out their life.. thanks for making me think of this, i knew saving all my clothes since 4 years ago would end up in something good... -3.14 rob l.
