Microwave gun | |||||||||||||||||
There are many fastening processes that would benefit by a method of selective heating such as a microwave process could provide. Open microwaves are especially dangerous as the normal sensing we have does not immediately make this danger obvious but a hot soldering iron tip, a naked blade,a propane torch flame are also dangerous, but more obvious. If a gun that could generate microwaves in a small focused area somewhat in the nature of a glue gun, but with proper guards to prevent accidental application of the dangerous area to the user, many materials sensitive to contact heating might be joined by special glues without damage to the material being joined.

They do that now, kind of. They use a glue that hardens with RF energy, so all you do is apply the glue to what you want glue, and then apply RF. Remember microwaves themselves don't generate heat, they prodce FR which excites water molecules inf the food to be heated (in the case of kitchen microware ovens).
I am happy to see that the concept is used, but I have yet to see the proper tool on the market in the hardware store.
I have a cardboard box containinig just the bare essentials taken from a perfectly good (not anymore!) microwave oven. Forgot how many watts it is.
I am only waiting for a microwave leak-detector to show-up in my toolbox before I attempt to build just the very thing! A 'Microwave Gun'!
I have thought too many times that it might be handy to have something I could hold in my hand and wave across something, heating with microwaves! I might chase flies, I might bond things! Maybe I'll hurt myself! It would be soo cool to have in my shop, next to the other dangerous power-tools!
If this project works out, maybe I'll do something with that 5-watt gas laser-tube and it's power supply, occupying another cardboard box...
Learn from the mistakes of others. If it doesn't blow up, it'll either electrocute you or cook you. Throw that junk away!
Admittedly a microwave gun could be dangerous but idiots and children will always find a way to injure themselves. After all, what else could settle a marital argument better than a quick lobotomy with a microwave gun? Probably undetectable by the police :).
I realize that the market for innovative gluing solutions is pretty large, however, the market for innovative weapons is even larger. So, my suggestion is - forget about gluing stuff together, this could be great for killing other people!!! The military potential for something like this is infinite. We could have our boys across the sea cooking enemy combatanrs instead of shooting them. Of course they will be in danger of getting cooked back by enemy microwave guns. This could be quite unpleasant. By the way, I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere that the Russians used high energy micorwave guns while they were fighting in Afganistan (don't know if this is true, though).
If it is a matter of being either cooked or having my brain smashed by a lump of lead, I really would not feel tempted by either one. The only difference would be that wars would become a good deal less noisy. Hearing, if nothing else, would improve tremendously.
I know the US military has experimented with microwave weapons, mostly as a less-lethal weapon. It's hard to generate a powerful enough microwave beam to kill people quickly enough to be competitive with more conventional weapons like guns. They've been considered for use as "area denial" weapons. Basically, to prevent the enemy from occupying a key location.
Sand, You mean to tell me you've never heard of a "MASER"?!!! It's like a LASER except with microwaves instead of light. Good greif! :-):-):-):-)
