Reduce the electricity bill | |||||||||||||||||
I have 2 ideas to improve the utility bills: 1. Replace the shingles on the roof with a material that change colors. During the summer the roof would turn white (or light color) during the winter the roof would turn dark. This would reduce the temperature in the attic by 20 degrees. The mechanism to change colors could be similar to the one use on billboards that have panels that rotate and change the advertisement. 2. Install a radiator outside the home (concealed on the roof for example) connected to the water heater. During the summer months an automatic valve would run the water through the radiator and increase the temperature of the water without the need of the use of the gas. The radiator would be painted black or dark color that would concentrate the sun's heat.

I have not heard of a material that would automatically change color over the seasons, but I imagine it might be managed by a mechanical system like vevetian blinds which might be expensive to install and maintain. Snow on the roof would defeat a color change. For well over 50 years there have been hot water heating systems in Florida based on concentrated sunlight.
