Create a website where people can post things they'd like to just give away, even if the item is broken or damaged. I constantly have electronics lying around that don't work for one reason or another and I invariably throw them out with the trash. Or I have items that Salvation Army won't take due to size or condition.

Preferred 'bidders' would be able to pick up the item in person to avoid any shipping or out-of-pocket expense on behalf of the 'giver.'

Great name.

Great idea.

There are interesting ways to determine who is "preferred bidder". Maybe people could actually bid dollars to be given to a charity of the "seller"'s choice.

Maybe e-bay should think about doing this.

A very similar idea was posted on this site by Albert Kaufman. He calls it Freecycle. Idea #508

He provided the link:www.freecycle.org

It appears that he was promoting this organization that does this sort of thing in a number of cities.

See http://www.craigslist.org (it originated in San Francisco).

It operates in numerous cities worldwide and includes a significant free-item/giveaway section.

I agree with the sentiment that E-Bay should set up a charity section. The seller, rather than setting a start bid or reserve (starting bid would automatically be $1, with no reserve), would simply select from a drop-down list of charities that E-Bay works with (there would be no problem in having E-Bay add suggested charities). E-Bay, then, rather than the seller, would recieve payment, passing it on to the charity in question (without taking their usual cut). Would be a very useful way of both getting rid of unnecessary clutter and raising money for charity, and the fact that the profits go to charity should provoke higher bids from the bidders.

This idea is already being done. I'm on two Freecycle lists and am currently giving stuff away. There are many Yahoo! Groups for it. I'm on the one for Houston and Pasadena so there's probably one for your town.
