What about a scanner on your shopping cart, along with a small display that tells what the total cost of your groceries is. A small printer (like they use at car rental locations or the police's parking ticket devices) prints out an itemized receipt. You give the receipt to the cashier, pay the bill, and leave! No need to put items in the cart, remove them, scan them, bag them, then return them to the cart!

I think this is a great idea for helping the consumer figure out how much has been spent. (It could also print our coupons.) But for self-service check-out, there is more of an issue of making mistakes. The current self-service check-out systems use weight of the object to ensure that the right item has been placed in the bag. Not perfect, but perhaps betterthan no check.

Great idea. IDEO demonstrated their method to designing products to the TV show "Nightline" a couple of years ago. They re-designed the shopping cart (see link)

IDEO is a very interesting company. If you get a chance, read "The Art of Innovation : Lessons in Creativity from IDEO, America's Leading Design Firm". It is almost as good as "Why Not?".
