At present fertilizer and insecticides are distributed over fields througout the growing season to encourage farm production. There are medicines taken by mouth with small components that have time delayed coating dissolution time so that the medicines have a very long lasting effect as each type of protective coating dissolves sequentially. If the same principle were applied to farm chemicals, some fertilizer would be absorbed immediately, some would be time delayed to have effect throughout the growing season and perhaps different types of fertilizer would become active at the proper time in the growth phase. This would eliminate or at least cut down the number of times the chemicals would have to be applied.

Time-delay fertilizers and pesticides might not be a good idea; they would eliminate the option of NOT applying, for whatever reason.
