Many complain that baseball is a boring sport to watch as compared to football, hockey and basketball where interest, action and activity abound.

I suggest that baseball adopt an approach to similar to football where each team fields a seperate offensive and defensive team. Thus, an offensive team would only bat and the defensive team would only play the field.

I beleive their are many very good proffessionals that can provide plenty of action at the plate that could'nt catch a cold. Also, their are plenty of athletes that can play in the field that could'nt hit a beach ball if their mother pitched it underhand.

This would certainly add a new dimension to the game by improving the quality and action of the game.

Do you think this would increase or decrease the overall team salary?

Barry Nalebuff, Mar 21 2004

I am not sure if an increase would occur. Each team would carry perhaps 10 – 12 offensives and maybe 12 defensive players with a few could go both ways. Teams would maintain the current pitching staff.

If their was an increase in salary costs, I would anticipate the increased level of interest and attendance would off-set these costs.

I can't make sense of this idea. This isn't really a change to the rules. It's a change of personnel.

Gordon Gartrelle, Mar 22 2004

This would require a change in the rules.

I cannot quote the rule specifically, but I believe the players who wish to remain in the batting lineup must play a position in the field. If a player is substituted from either offensively or defensively, they are not allowed to re-enter the game in any role

It's funny...I've always thought other sports should go the way of baseball. Players would be required to play all aspects of the game. I think changing the basic premise of the same players on both offense as well as defense would be harmful to the future of the sport. Although free agency, salaries, and steriods have tainted the sport, the essence of the purity of baseball remains. It still is the same sport everyone has played as a child and this suggestion seems to get a little too close to changing that.
