Physical contact-free prisons | |||||||||||||||||
This idea was inspired after reading this idea posted by Sweetheart Is there any reason to allow two prison inmates to have any physical contact with each other? Rape and assault in prisons can be dealt with by having each prisoner wear equipment which creates an ad-hoc network within the prison. Suppose each prisoner were to wear a special belt, if any two belts come within a certain distance of each other, the inmate is provided with a quick warning. If the inmate does not move away, or if the inmate were to repeatedly enter another inmates space in a short period of time, an unpleasent event occurs to both inmates. Maybe the inmates always wear tethered restraints which allow freedom of movement unless their virtual boundaries are broken. Or maybe a personal alarm rings in a hearing aid the prisoners wear which could be loud enough in the prisoners own head to disable them temporarily (I believe this can be accomplished without permanently damaging the prisoners hearing by using bone conduction hearing aparatus). Of course, the system could be disabled in certain areas where physical contact would be allows such as on a basketball court, or mess hall.

The belt wouldn't work, because a prisoner could zap another prisoner just by getting too close. Tethered restraints would simply be wrong. With the hearing aid, how would the system know which prisoner to zap (or would it zap both, like the belt)?
How about a male chastity belt?
I'm afraid researching them from work is a bad idea, though. The first link I found was arguably NSFW.
I like your idea, but I would think that a good modification is one where there is true sepration of prisoners. Sure, they may need to be together for meals and such, but other then that, they should have a cell, with bathroom and shower. They should also be able to lock themselves in when they want as well as when it is required. No sharing cells, no additional physical contact.
It would make for a long prison term, but there would be no problems with the physical contact, and there would be no problem with peer pressure and other issues that come up.
The only problem is that it would be expensive.
Why do peple always whant to iimplemente radio technology to solve a simple problem? If a prisoner assaults another prisoner, it is still assault and punishable by law. How hard would it be to just put to people in seperate cells?
The first penitentiary in America was the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, built at the suggestion of the Quakers in the early 1800s. Every con, regardless of crime, was in isolation, with his own cell. No contact, no talking, singing, etc. They lived in their cell 24/7, with an attached small exercise space on the outside. It worked, was simple, but was considered too expensive because of the square footage per con.
