I think I understand that everything will sooner or later be wireless, but in the meantime, can't someone come up with a way to retract alll those ugly cords that go from the CPU to everywhere - sort of like the retractable cord in a vacuum cleaner? What isn't needed should be out-of-sight.
And while I'm at it, I'm 60 years old and my days of rummaging around under my desk on my hands and knees for the right thing-a-ma-dad to connect to the correct receptacle are long gone. Can't there be a panel of sorts with a lid on it that can be attached to my desk where I can stand and connect the red cord to the red receptacle and the blue to the blue, etc? How hard could that be?

I'm not sure if you are only referring to your computer, or cords in general. There are organizers available, check out the Cord Turtle.
Also, if you are referring only to your computer, you can get a USB hub that sits on your desk allowing you to plug in most of your periferals to make your life easier.
I'm all for your idea, but I think the solutions are available.
The problem lies in the design of the desktop computer, all the parts are their own seperate thing, which can be swapped out for somthing else on a whim, like your monitor. Mac's have the right idea, in that the computer is one, all inclusive device, all you need to plug in is power and your internet connection.
But as pedalpete suggested, there are devices where all your chords are in an easier to reach place, but you still have to deal with one for power, one for your network, one for USB, ect...
In a perfect world, a small "distrobution center" if you will, would sit under your monitor, and you could swap out modules for whatever device you where plugging in, wether it be power, internet, USB, firewire, I can go on forever. The idea is that you could put all your connections in an easily accessable place, and this place would only have connections for what you need.
The "tower" is that connection pount for everything. You plug things into the rear that you don't have to play with often, and the things you do into the front. Many PCs these days have front panel audio, USB and Firewire connections.
There are also numerous cord handling devices and techniqes.
