Each car has a RFID which uniquely identifies the car, with a database link to owners through the vehicle registry, set when the owner registers. When a car is sensed as going too fast by a highway monitor, it would read the RFID, and mail the ticket to the offending owner. Points would not accrue to any given person, because the monitor cannot tell who is driving. This avoids the usual double indemnity, where you pay the speeding fine, and then pay again with an increased insurance rate.

People will hate this idea because they will no longer be able to speed.

It is too big brotherish, in that they could have sensors all over the place to track your movements around the city.

I wouldn't mind not being able to speed. What I would mind is archival of RFID hits for later analysis.

Like classicsat said, the problem lies with the "big brother" potential.

Here in the UK they are going to pilot this - using GPS technology to track a car and charge for road usage. Next it will be auto-speeding detection, and then they will be selling your details to marketing companies (this is already happening here) and then your complete movements will be available on the internet for anyone to track. Next I guess, we will all have to wear ID tags that will be picked up by the mass of phone masts now irradiating us.

We have to stop the rot - this is the toe end of the wedge.

This system already exists, it's called a license plate. Albuquerque, NM currently gives failing to stop tickets at many of its intersections.

Just have a chip in the car generate the ticket. Put a printer in the glovebox & have the GPS direct you strait to prison.

Just kidding. I do think we would be shocked if we could see the year 2017 from here.
