Organise the Start menu | |||||||||||||||||
PROBLEM Most people I know let the Windows start menu grow wild and full of impossible-to-navigate shortcuts. The use of the menu is rapidly deteoriated based upon how much software you have installed and how little time you have to constantly rearrange it. SOLUTION A software application that automatically organises entries in the start menu into a logical hierarchy. e.g. Utilities > Desktop Publishing > Word Processors > Microsoft Word You could have the software connect to a web database that maintains logical categories for software applications. Allow users to submit new category placements if the software is not already listed.

Could be done automatically, I do it manually though.
Excellent. I hope Microsoft is listening. I waste too much time with that stuff.
Good idea. I rarely use the start menu except to copy the shortcuts and put them in folders where they will be handy.
I am not sure if this idea is worth the effort. Will be of help only if you have like some 50+ programs installed on a computer. Then also, you have an option to choose the location at the install time. A person who can't manage Windows start menu at install may probably not be able to use the application to sort the menu - i mean the user either might not be inclined to do it or it is too fussy for the user to manage. Simply, manually effort or initial effort is the best best.
