Using existing GPS information and an updated database of speed limits for the roads in your area, the speed limit of the road you are on could appear on your dashboard. Adding to that, the car could inform you if you are drastically above the speed limit. So if you are going 50 mph in a 30 mph, it might give a mild beep or a light may come on or something like that.

Given that my car already annoys the hell out of me by; beeping when I don't buckle the passenger seat belt, beeping when I put my blinker on, automatically locking me in whenever I put my key in the ignition, and I have to practically enter a key-sequence to get the windows to go up, I'd suggest putting fewer useless gadgets and features in vehicles. I don't need a seat warmer and a cell phone tray in my car. Cars are supposed to take us quickly from point A to point B. If I wanted a comfortable place to chill out, special features to cater to my drinking and smoking habits, and dials and knobs to play with to occupy my short attention span, I'd buy a nice armchair and stay the hell home. Drivers have enough to distract them from the act of not driving into things. Adding more beeps, lights, and whistles will only make driving even more dangerous.

I think this idea is good.In fact, instead of using GPS, the car should be able to pick up the speed limit in the zone, by getting this data from the speed limit postings themselves, either visually or some signal which can be tracked by the car's electronics.

Sometimes i find myself on a road, where i am not sure of the speed limit, and spend the better half of my driving time, worrying over whether i am over the speed limit or not.

I do dissagree that giving annoying beeps if its over the speed limit, may not be a good answer, but some visual indication, such as a blinking red light would be sufficient.
