how about bullets that cool them selves when fired, specially from machine guns, so the the barrells dont get really hot.....well, hmm, what about self cooling engine piston heads etc... i dont know how, just an idea, btw, this is my first ever visit to this site, and first idea... please dont my spelling. It is a good idea that gun barrels remain cool, but we just don't know how to do it easily.
A friend told me that in World War II there was a gun that had a cylinder around the barrel that you filled with water to keep it cool. I'm not sure what gun it was ...
Do a Google search on the follwing terms:machine gun water barrelYou will find plenty of info on keeping gun barrels cool.
Water-cooled machine guns date back before WW1. The problem with gun barrels getting hot is not because of the bullets, but by the very hot gases caused by the exploding propellant in the cartridge. Unless you use a very highly compressed gas to propel the projectile, such as a BB air gun, you have to use some kind of burning propellant. Gatling-type guns get around this by having multiple rotating barrels.
heat aids in expanding the gas used to move the bullet, a cold bullet would decrease the effect. there is also no way for a bullet to be that cold.
