Every four years we elect a President. Every two years we elect our Representative. Every six years we elect our senators. Why not have the elections happen randomly?

On January 1st, elected positions that would expire within the next 6 months would be picked randomly. 90 days later the election would occur. The day after the election, another number of elected positions would be picked for an election in 90 days. There would be national elections every 90 days. Some senators may not be elected for 7-8 years (depends on the exact random method used).

Why? Politician and government run according to an election cycle. Policy is set to the schedule of the election. Politicians are hoping that voters have a short term memory and only worry about "what have you done for me lately?". If politicians have no idea exactly when they will be elected, they will always worry about what their constitutes think of their recent record. This will also reduce the long campaigns and big business contributions. Finally, the balance of power could swing every 90 days, so both parties would need to quickly compromise to demonstrate they have gotten something done.

What is the downside of random elections? Voting every 90 days is expensive. However, with electronic ballets and possibly on-line voting in the future, it would be less expensive than today. Another issue might be new people entering every 90 days. This is not unlike most organizations today. In my business, I see new employees all the time. They usually re-energize everyone. Something we need in Congress.

Any thoughts?

At first glance I thought you wanted to randomally elect the representatives. Looking at Parliament members of my country today, you get the feeling that randomally sampling the local asylums and prisons would result in more sane and honest politicians.

I like this idea, because it will keep politicians on their toes (although I'm pretty sure they have hooves).

However, 90 days will probably not be enough time for a serious opponent to step forward, introduce himself, campaign, get donations from corrupt businessmen, hire private detectives to investigate the other guy's private life, campaign some more, get caught cheating on his wife, apologize on national TV, campaign some more, etc.

Running against an incumbent will be very difficult on so short a notice, so the end result could be getting stuck with the same politician over and over.
