Too often a pedestrian pushes the traffic light signal and then doesn't wait for the cross indicator (but rather jumps the gun). Thus the traffic is stopped and there is no one waiting to cross the street. Why not have the signal buzz or flash before it changes and require the person to repress the button (to confirm that he or she is still there). As a reward the waiting time could be slightly shortened.

I honestly didn't think those cross-walk buttons work. Maybe it's b/c I live in a large city and often get frustrated with traffic flow (my light turns green, next light turns red... stop, go, stop, go) that I can't imagine the DOT allowing pedestrians to control traffic with the push of a button.

The trend in traffic control is towards intelligent grids where the traffic lights are aware of the switching of adjacent sets (to allow faster througput of traffic). This idea could work well in low density areas but having a reward might conflict with areas aiming to improve high density traffic flow.

Oh.. just thought.. the system would also have to be user friendly towards the blind. I can't really see this being implemented for that reason alone.

A Flashing light wouldn't be visible for the blind, but a ratteling signal that rattles faster or with different intervals. In Belgium it is allready used. You can hear, at allmost every pedestrian crossing, a loud tick every second and when the light turns green it ticks much faster, the ratteling would be the green light for the blind. In Hungary it was a kind of beep and with different pitch for the different street to cross (East-west or north-south).cheers, R.

what about lights that react to a horn. honk your horn, a camera takes a picture and then changes the lights say in 5 secs. if you do the wrong thing you're caught on camera.
