Anyone who has repaired termite damage can tell you that termites have a distinctive smell.

Usually, we look for them by probing with a knife.

There is a big problem doing termite inspections in many modern homes because all of the places that might have termites are covered with sheetrock or other materials that would be damaged by probing for termites.

We need a 'sniffer,' an electronic gadget that would recognize the smell of the termites without destructively testing the area.

If dogs can be trained to detect explosives or drugs, it should be possible to train them to detect termites.

I saw a TV show (Discovery channel?) on the amazing capabilities of dogs and they did have a few dogs that were trained to detect termites. I thought they did it by the sound of termites chewing, but it could have been smell.

They also had a dog that was 100% accurate in sniffing out melanoma (skin cancer) - so why not create a device that can do the same thing? I only require 1% of gross sales for use of my idea :-)

Along this same line, I wonder if a dog can be trained to discover where a mouse or mice might be entering a house.

I've spent large effort trying to find where a mouse might've gotten into my house--to prevent any future entry.

I'm sure a properly trained dog could just walk around your house and say 'here is entrance' and you could plug it up.
