This one is just for collision avoidance. Every car can be equipped with collission avoidance units which can talk to any other car/bike/truck. For example, when a car merges on to freeway, it should be able to communicate to the cars on the nearest lane and be able to take "permission" before it merges. The permission may or may not require human intervention.

Several peer-to-peer wireless technologies already exist for doing this. Ultra Wide Band (UWB) is one such technology. Apart from being low power, high data rate technology, it also allows us to do ranging measurements, which means we can find how close the other car is.

Extensive research and testing is required before this can be deployed.
