It seems that with today's technology, punching bags could be a lot more interesting.
Smart punching bags could be developed that could record, track, and measure hits.
Futhermore, making a boring punching bag fun - smart punching bags could be programmed to make sounds when hit. For example one could hear the grunt sounds we make when we get hit. The bag could motivate punchers by yelling actual commands - LEFT JAB! ROUNDHOUSE KICK! and the bag could be a inspirational coach saying things like - "Is that all you got"? or "Come on hit me!"
Taken a step further a smart punching bag could come with an series of boxing and kickboxing workout routines that users could interchange by opening the bag and inserting. Think about TAE BO goes wireless meets punching bag. There could be programs for kids, adults, begginers, advanced, elderly, etc.
The bag would be great for at home use and could spark a revolution in smart home gym equipment and training for that matter.
The final step for a smart punching bag would be to scan in or upload a head shot of someone you dislike and go at it!

Well I certainly find it interesting.
While it's an interesting idea, I don't think it really captures the essence of what a punching bag is all about. I'm an avid kickboxer. I've got a punchbag in my back garden. When I bought it, it was originally an air/water combo. Both inner compartments burst within a few hours of use. [I filled it with rags and old clothes and it's much better to use now...]
Now add technology to that mix? Personally, I don't think it's a good combination. IMHO, punchbags should be left low-tech.
With he rapid advance in robotics it should be possible for a punching bag to fight back. The controls could be set for "idiot". "standard", or "Mohammed Ali" and it would be able to respond accordingly. In the privacy of your own exercise room there would be no shame publicly revealed if you were knocked out by your own punching bag but it certainly would be a stimulus to better effort. Once the technology were perfected, it would be possible for tournements between different punching bag models elimininating the obvious brutality and physical injuries sustained now by human participants.
