There are two problems with dating services. One, if you sign up with one service (and pay the money) you only access that one companies membership, which is often quite small. And Two, people who describe themselves can lie through their teeth (which can be dangerous indeed).
I propose that instead of using the current dating service model, background verifier services would be used. Someone would come to your home and go through all the normal forms and such, but they would SEE you and critique you and your home somewhat, they would also perform a complete background check to see if you are everything you claim. You would pay for this service. Their results (your profile) would be posted on their network much like most online dating services, but instead it would be in an open access industry standard (like XML). Sites (like Google) would be set up to perform the search over all of the verifier networks, pulling from a larger pool. Other sites would rate the reliability of the verifier companies. Some may be cheap fly-by-night operations, while others would work hard to be trustworthy. The consumer would be directed to the verifier page, where they may charge a small fee to get more information. The consumer would be getting more from both sides.
