As a result of "security" issues, airlines now ask you to get to the airport hours before your flight -- only to have you wait forever to check in. Security lines may not be long, but check in is.

Along with on-time flight arrival information, why doesn't the DOT publish the average wait for check in by airline? (Idea from Ben Polak.)

They do, USA Today has published it twice. It listed 100 airports and their average wait time, and what times of day the wait was longer.

I'd like to see check in and delays IN PROPORTION to safety and security issues. Also, how about a sort of Olympics for airport security? The airlines, TSA, and securitty firms could compete to see who had the best "x-ray weapons finders" or who could throw a suitcase the furthest...
