Do you have trouble keeping track of the expiration date of food labels? Why not have labels that are timed to fade (or instead of fading have a skull and cross bones appear) a reasonable time after the food is no longer supposed to be eaten. While this might not work with all foods, it would work with foods with a definite short shelf life.
