PipeWatchman is a unit I helped invent that helps prevent your pipes from freezing.

It uses the principle of allowing the water to run. By allowing water to run you are keeping temp up with the refresh of ground water temps. My unit has a mirco valve with temp sensor. If temp gets to low it opens mirco valve and allows water to run until warmer water temp is sensed. Depending on your piping this is not a large amount of water in normal homes. Unit screws on faucet and looks like a nozzle. Only 4" long and 1.5" OD.

Self contained and is good for about 100,000 open and close operation. No batt. required.

retails for $15.95

I'd question the price, but I have seen a device that drains the pipe upon freezing (it was on clearence in a surplus outlet, so that says something about the concept). I'd put my money toward insulating the pipes.
