McDonalds is testing out a self-serve kind of kiosk. You punch in what you want (pick say a big mac icon), put a $10 bill in the machine and it gives you change (just like the self checkout lines in the grocery market), then you can sit at your table and wait -- read the paper, rest, wathc TV if there is one, watch the kids on the play area, etc. When your order is ready, the McD guy brings your tray to your table instead of plopping it on the counter upfront. No waiting in lines, unless you want to. And no need to talk to or deal with a surly or lazy worker.

How about this? A cafeteria type setup, where you go by pulling the prepared items from shelves, and take them to a till?
More places should experiment with it. Be nice to have one for the drive through, too. No more of this :
'3 soft tacos and two bean and cheese burritos'*3 soft tacos and two bean, cheese, and rice burritos show up on the screen*'No rice on the burritos. Just two bean and cheese burritos.'*everything clears. Two bean, cheese, and rice burritos show up.*'I need three soft tacos, too. two bean and cheese burritos without rice!'*screen shows three soft tacos and four bean, cheese, and rice burritos*
Sigh.
I've always been frustrated by vending technology, and I don't think that we have machines that can adequately replace human beings just yet. The poster above me brings up a good point; This would mean the end of special orders, which are outrageous to his extent, but let's be honest, the power to choose is where the money we spend goes to.
