In Poland there are very effective raised speed bumps in front of schools. It is impossible to drive fast past a school. which is good, and much cheaper than cameras, enforcement etc.

But the authorities will not put them on other residential streets as buses have problems. Why not have a special indentation in the speed bump at bus axel width. Buses could drive through slowly, cars would still have to slow up. Then ramps could go anywhere.

This would save thousands of lives

If I'm not mistaken garbage trucks, dump trucks, moving vans, & semi-trailer trucks have about the same wheelbase width as a school bus. And in my opinion these are some of the vehicles that you really want to be going slower in a residential neighborhood.

Add to that the problems associated with trying to plow snow in a speed bump area and you can see why public officials might be slow to endorse this idea.

There are a number of speedbumps in the UK that are narrow enough for wide tracked vehicles, such as buses but also goods vehicles, to be unaffected by the bump. The problem is that this assumes that buses are not involved in accidents. And will stick to the speed limit. This afternoon on my way home from work I was following a bus, and while I was travelling at the maximum legal speed, it was accelerating away from me. A bus will do more damage than a car in a collision with a pedestrian.

i don't think it would save lives to allow buses to travel faster than cars.
