How about an after-market attachment for lawn mowers that could swing out and trim the edges while you mow?

Something regulated/adjustable by wire or cable via a joystick that would allow you to trim around obstacles while you drive or push your lawn mower. It could operate via a power-take-off from any engine.

I think it would work best if it were built into the mower. The problem is that if it can't reach EVERYTHING, then you still need a separate trimmer.
