Do you hesitate drinking directly from a soda can because it is dirty? Why not have the plastic six pack holders also cover the tops of the cans? That way the can should be clean when taken out of the holder and the drinker doesn't have to worry about washing it off (unless their name is Felix). I don't know if it is suburban legend, but I have read about birds strangling on the current form of six pack holder. With this idea there would be no rings for the birds to get into.

I like it. Cans kind of gross me out as they are. Who knows what filth is in there.

Btw, here's how Cecil Adams addresses the myth of birds strangling on plastic six-pack rings: http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a990716.html

I think this is a great idea for the two reasons you gave. However, the covers would need to be designed so that the cans could still be stacked, as they are currently made to do.

A plastic film that covers the top and comes off as you pull the opening tab would solve the problem and be universal not requiring the can be sold in multiple packs.

I think we should be more concerned about the mechanism of the ring pull. In the UK in order to avoid the litter problem with discarded ring pulls as on old style cans, the ring pull is now captive. Pulling the ring up and back swivels part of the outer surface of the can down into the interior where it is submerged by the contents when drinking. Anything contaminating the outer top of the can could be transferred to the contents. Not very hygienic!
