I tend to commute during times of heavy traffic, and get tired of moving my foot from the accelerator to the brake pedal during stop-and-go traffic. I would like to see a hand brake mounted on the steering wheel or shifter, so I could keep my foot on the gas pedal.
The biggest downside I see to this is a safety concern arising from someone applying the brake and gas at the same time, and launching the car forward. In order to overcome this, the hand brake could override the accelerator, so the brake always wins.

I can imagine a small console or door armrest mounted lever operated by a fore and aft movement that enables a modest degree of acceleration and normal braking. After the car has come to rest the brake would remain applied till the throttle was next operated.
Consider using hand controls which are typically used for mobility vehicles driven by people who have difficulty using their legs for driving. Through this system you pull a level mounted on the steering column to accelerate and push it to brake.
