I say the first 40 years of our lives we are "retired" with plenty of money to travel and enjoy life. Then we work for the next 40 years.

By the time I'm old enough to retire (I'm projecting at age 75!) I'm going to be too old and tired to enjoy my time off!

(I'm also not a fan of the 5 day work week... who came up with that!?)

As insane as this suggestion might seem at first, it is not without some logic. The current increases in worker productivity due to the computer revolution is bound to continue and perhaps accelerate as more sophisticated robots come on the market. At the moment all the gains in wealth due to this accrues to the business owners who are forcing the greater capability on fewer workers who are demanded to put in longer hours with little extra compensation. Carried to an extreme, the work force will keep diminishing but robots do not buy anything so people will have to be paid to buy commodities to keep the system going. In the end, perhaps the suggested arrangement or something similar may come about.

Nice concept. So where does the money come from?

Isn't the idea that once you accrue enough money you can quit working? Age doesn't matter. People who start out enough money to not work are called "independently wealthy".

Unfortunately, I am not in that group.

Yeah, me neither.... just seems like a waste of youth to spend it working....

It could never happen... but dare to dream! ;)

We have this already. It's called college.

I've always thought that this is the way things should be, but it'll never happen. I think the closest you can get to enjoying yourself until you're too old to is, yes, college. This reminded me of a joke I'd read a while back, not a clue who wrote it first but I tracked it down for this post. Here it is:

The most unfair thing about life is the way it ends. Life istough. It takes up a lot of your time. What do you get at theend of it? A death. What's that, a bonus? I think the lifecycle is all backwards. You should die first, get it out ofthe way. Then you live in an old age home. You get kicked outwhen you're too young, you get a gold watch, you go to work. You work forty years until you're young enough to enjoy yourretirement. You do drugs, alcohol, you party, you get readyfor high school. You go to grade school, you become a kid,you play, you have no responsibilities, you become a littlebaby, you go back into the womb, spend your last nine monthsfloating . . . then finish off as an orgasm.

That joke is great!! :)

And what is w/ all this "college" stuff.. how many of you spent the first 40 years of your life in college???

And if so.... what the heck do you DO for a living!?
