Barcodes on postage stamps | |||||||||||||||||
Right now tracking of mail is a special process, but why not put a barcode (or RFID) on every stamp, plus a human readable number that would be your tracking number. That way you could just pop an envelope in the mailbox and you wouldn't need to go to a post-office (or UPS or Fedex) to get a tracking number. Since tracking is expensive right now, I would imagine that the barcoded stamps would cost extra. But eventually this might be merged into standard first-class service.

I checked the FedEx website. They seem to have about five ways to track, some of which do not require tracking numbers. The last time I sent something via Express Mail, it didn't get there on time. That was back about 1993. I haven't tried them since.
Canada Post has a "premium" service where they can track a letter or parcel. IME it is not terribly accurate.
