Water temp. notches on faucet | |||||||||||||||||
Like many people, my kitchen faucet has a single lever that swings left/right to adjust the water temperature. I find that I typically swing the lever to the hard left position when I want hot water -- but at that position the water is too hot, so I have to swing it back a little when I really want warmish water (for rinsing dishes, etc) Why not have faucets with fixed stops or notches for hot, warm, cold, etc. Like the 0,45,90 settings on carpentry tools, or the tab stops on an old typewriter, or even the stick shift in a car. You could override if necessary, but 99% of the time, the settings would work. This would save you money by encouraging the use of warm water rather than hot, and it would easier to use (no more fiddling to get just the right temperature). Obviously there would need to be some sort of user-adjustable stops on the side to control the locations for your particular feed ratios.

In Helsinki many of the single lever faucets already have a temporary stop at a warm temperature which can be over- ridden when really hot water is needed
How about a temperature gauge attached to the faucet?
A small battery operated pyrometer would give instant changes in temperature. This probably would be a good thing on the shower head too, though by the time you seen the guage change you would be feeling it.
Might be difficult to implement. The temperature of the water could depend on how much time has passed since the water heater last cycled. My shower gets hotter in the morning, about 30 minutes after my wife has showered. If the water heater has not cycled recently, the HOT water is not as hot. A tankless water heater may be better at maintaining a constant temp however.
