Currently, we elect our presidents on the basis of their charisma, vague academic merits, military achievements, past offices held and/or just simply because they have the cash to run for office. This seems somewhat dysfunctional. There should be degrees in government or civic management that are specifically designed to train people to run governments efficiently and ethically. Perhaps there are degrees like that and I am ignorant of them. I think you can get a degree in political science but does that train people to be efficient and ethical office holders or does it just make them better mudslingers? There should be colleges devoted to producing excellent civic leaders. And it should be essentially a pre-requisite for holding any office. Trump wouldn't hire a philosophy major to run a subsidary would he? Why are we hiring people with degrees in biology, business, and what-not to run our country?

Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs (as well as other schools) offer degrees such as a Masters in Public Policy and Masters in Public Administration designed to train leaders in government in effective and ethical administration. As long as we operate in a democratic system where people vote on whatever criteria they feel is most important at the moment, I don't think we can expect to see any new prerequisites for office. If people felt university training were necessary, then politicians would all be running off to get their MPA's and MPP's.
