Considering the size and the impact of the tragedy of 9/11 on almost all aspects of US life and by extension, on the life of the rest of the world, it is surprising that there is not a day set aside to contemplate the wide misery conferred upon the general population of innocent people worldwide of military violence which is ongoing and , it seems, will continue into the future with no possibility of termination. It is probable that terrorists and also the standard organized military of each nation, accepts what has come to be called “collateral damage” as the acceptable price for achieving their aims. Should there not be an international day, perhaps the eleventh of September, set aside to examine this wanton viciousness and discuss how it can be stopped? Forums could be convened in each population center to discuss how much sacrifice is acceptable for achieving even what might be considered worthwhile ends and how to gauge when and how this sacrifice should be mitigated and stopped. It would bring the focus down to groups of average people instead of having it sequestered within experts who seem to me to be quite callous to the consequences of approved violence.

Great idea, but i do not think it should be on 9/11, anymore than it should be on 8/6 (the day over 100,000 innocent Japanese people where incinerated in Hiroshima) or the first day that the US started dropping 72,000,000 litres of chemical weapons on innocent people in Vietnam, the day Isreal was created, the day UN sanctions were placed on Iraq, the day the Chilian government was overthrown, the day Khmer Rouge took power in Cambodia, or perhaps the more recent day in 1994 when the world stood back and did nothing while over 1,000,000 people were hacked to death in Rwanda.... do i need go on ? I really do understand your good intentions but really apart from being broadcast live on TV and involving Americans, why is 9/11 anymore important a day than any other day ?

The concept does not require any particular day and 9/11 occurred to me only because it is most recent to my mind. All of the insults to humanity that you mention are relevant and important and perhaps another day might be appropriate.

Perhaps we should have a worldwide "Innocent Victims Day". National calendars would have to be checked to make sure we picked a day that no other major holidays fell on.

I'm going to spawn another idea, called "Humanity Day," based on tredair's variation on sand's idea.

Plenty of other days not to have the observed memorial, like December 7. That's the day the Hiroshima tragedy was set in motion.
