I mess around with MIDI authoring. I've got four ways to play back MIDI data. Two of them depend on being played back on a computer different from the one they were authored on.

I'd like to be able to hit "Play" in Cakewalk Music Creator and have the music play back through either TiMiDiTy or WildMidi.

Streaming MIDI over TCP/IP or UDP/IP would be a great solution to my problem. Both computers are on the same Ethernet switch, so latency isn't a problem.

Neat idea. Not sure why it hasn't been done yet... maybe because some midi software requires real-time response that a network can't give? I guess if you're only talking about playback, then it really shouldn't be an issue.
