I've got over two gigs of *legal* music on my computer, all of it in module formats such as ScreamTracker, FastTracker and ImpulseTracker. The music is awesome. And it's modularized.

Module audio formats consist of sound samples and playback instructions. The result is something similar in nature to MIDI, but where the artist gives you the sounds he wants you to use.

There are many great sites out there that allow people to upload their music and patches to share with everyone else, but there aren't any sites out there that seek out the authors of sound patches from the days when music trading took place on BBSs.

I'd like to see someone build an organization of volunteers that would go through the effort of going through old music, finding the current authors, and asking them for permission to re-release their music and patches.
