I recently went to a custom home building office where you get to customize your whole house. Choosing every little detail was time consuming. When it came to carpets there were infinite amount colors and patterns to choose from. Once you choose one, you are stuck with it for years. If the pattern went out of style, your house would look old and out of fashion.
Why not have a color changing carpet made with color changing fabrics. A computer would control the style and color of the carpet. Changing the carpet style would be like changing your desktop background. You could even display messages, pictures, or birthday reminders. The possibilities are endless.

It's a fun idea, but not practical at the moment. It would be equivalent to having a monitor screen the size of your house. In general, submitted ideas should have some concept as to how the idea could be acomplished with current technology.
It could be done with chemicals, which the fibres in the carpet would have elements that would react to an outside agent, by changing the colour. Now of course, the chemicals would have to be not messy, and non-toxic.
Maybe optical fibers encased in a nearly transparent layer of traditional carpet fibers would do the trick. The optical fibers would be attached to a grid under the carpet somewhat like pads are put under them now.
Perhaps a carpet of transparent plastic fibers with a series of tubes embedded below them could work. Colored fluids could be passed through, and lighting could be accomplised with fiber-optics or LED lights. Still seems like a lot of work, though. You could try white carpet with washable inks, so you can shampoo it to change the color.
