Not exactly a new idea, but how about the power laces from Back to the Future?

I used to have a horrible time keeping my shoes tied...I finally switched to slip-ons a few years ago.

I used to have trouble with the kids thinking it was funny to keep untying them. I finally started just doing the loop twice. They never come undone by pulling on one of the strings that way.
