Many campaigns have many short-term goals for total contributions. Giving $10 to help a campaign reach their $5m goal seems pointless. If instead, one were to get thousands of people to commit to a small amount of money which would only be utilized if they were to meet their goal, the campaign may be able to secure larger numbers of small donations. It seems it would be easier to give when you are certain it would help to achieve a goal. It would also help increase the pledges just prior to the deadline as your small donation at that point is securing the donations from all of those who have already pledged.
