Not long ago I was trying to figure out which bus routes I'd need to take to get from my house to the office if I decided to give public transportation a try. In my case the office is about 20 miles away and in the next county over. It would have been nice if the transit site had had a tool similar to MapQuest. Using it I could have keyed in my home address, work address and the time I needed to be at work. Then the program could have easily shown which route or routes would get me there on time.

In Helsinki the public transport system has a site which responds to an end point submission by giving various busses and trams and the subway system to get from one point to the other and the time required for each route. Since all the systems move on relatively precise schedules this information is precise and useful. The address of the site is http://aikataulut.ytv.fi/reittiopas/en/?mm=trip&sm=&m=&adv=&map=&n=&a=&b=&c=&an=&bn=&cn=&keya=&keyb=&keyc=&date=20040718&time=1221¶ms=1l3l1l3l2lll1l1l1l1l1l0
Treadair:
Step One: Move to the San Francisco Bay Area.
Step Two: Visit 511.org
Step Three: Be very, very impressed. :-)
Seriously, they've done exactly what you describe. My wife and I have both used it countless times over the past couple years, and it really works.
To sandYour link is unusable. You should use tinylink.com to shorten it.
I visited 511.org and found it not that easy to use. Can be improved.
RATP's french site is not bad. Try a search from tour eiffel (place) to arc de triomphe (place).
kevinb9n - Went to 511.org. You're right, the 511 TakeTransit Trip Planner is what I was looking for. Don't know the area well enough to test it out but if it works the way it looks like it's designed to then that's what we need down here. I'll pass the link on the local bus company.
I tried Tinylink. Doesn't work. Sorry.
