The language we use helps create our reality. Democrats should stop running from the label "liberal" - which has become a real liability- and re-embrace a term like "Progressive".

Conservatives have largely succeeded in making a "liberal" a dirty word with connotations of moral laxity and spinelessness - "liberals" let theirbrother-in law routinely have sex with their daughter - and aren't bothered a whit about it!

The term "Progressive" on the other hand - has connotations of structure, and after alsp contains the word "progress"- which is, among the general public at least, still a nearly univeral positive term.

"Progressives" also by definition move forward, and can be contrasted to conservative-reactionaries (perhaps "reactionary" could be slowed substituted for"conservative" and painted just as black as "liberal") who are mired in the past and only wish to preserve their privilege.

I'm more comfortable with "liberal" than "progressive." "Progressive" makes me think of a drive to communism/socialism, which I don't think is what the Democratic party is about. (Please, no flames debate on that point. I'm not interested.)

I do agree that a new term needs to be coined. The Democratic party really needs to get its act together if it still wants to be a major force in national politics. Currently, I suspect a third-party could, if properly organized and spun, wedge itself into the House.

I think a third party SHOULD wedge itself into the White House. At this rate neither a Democrat nor a Republican will enjoy majority support from the citizenry. Unless my view of politics is skewed by my relative young age, I've never seen the nation as divided as it is today. If I'm wrong and we've gone through a previous time of tension barring the Civil War era, how did we overcome it?

. . . bet you are too young to remember when Castro wanted to help the Progress of Cuba! That is what a PROGRESSIVE LIBERAL is to me! It seems as though every time a Liberal wants another Progressive Law - another group gets short changed, deceived, and loses ANY Right to their own personal Freedom!Visit the New Slanted Facts Political Forum
