I have medical condition that I can eat only a certain types of food. This may be true for many people. This is more than a bit of challenge during the air travel. You end up being hungry or, even worse, you end up eating something you do not want to eat.

The airline can give facility to order any food that you want to have from the menu (while you are booking your ticket or on the web).

They can team up with a variety of chains (from fast food to special restaurents - Burger king to Olive garden) come up with a portion suitable for flight (Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner) and deliver them through a common caterer

I am positive they can do better than the food they offer in the flight.

Have you tried calling ahead, asking for such accomodations? I wouldn't ask for anything fancy, just perhaps mention you're a vegetarian, or you can only eat (Insert some simple example of food that wouldn't cause them to go too far out of their way.)...

If your problem qualifies as a handicap, they may be required to provide you with appropriate accomodations. But I'm not a lawyer.

As a diabetic I always order my special meals. I also see delivery of kosher, vegetarian, and other food specials on many flights. But to widen the selection the idea is excellent to give travellers an "added' feature for a few extra Dollars.
