And could work well in and around Portland. It's a great place to live and raise a family. For an example, check out www.cascadiacommons.org

It would be great to see Portland and Metro supporting this type of development, community, rather than the suburban development model we see growing everywhere.

I really like this idea. I wasn't aware it actually existed outside of Amish communities. To be widely accepted in todays America, I imagine you'd have to hire a cleaning, cooking and daycare staff. With enough people in the small 'village' that would be pretty easy.

No, we don't hire anyone. Things work well with all volunteer labor so far.

Check www.cohousing.org for a description of what cohousing is, a list of cohousing groups (built and forming) in the U.S., etc. There is very little government support, finanical or otherwise, for cohousing in the U.S. It is being driven by several thousand very dedicated people. But Portland, OR is a place where government-driven cohousing just might be possible.
