There are some crime prevention programs already in place in Clovis - maybe we just need a lot more participation in these programs. The main two that come to mind are "Code Blue: Citizens on Patrol" and the "Neighborhood Watch" programs. It seems like, that maybe the "bad guys" need to know that the citizens of Clovis are not going to just stand back and let them ransack our city. It seems to me, that before the crime level gets unmanagable - we need to "just say no" to the criminals. It's our city - and we are not going to allow our citizens to be bullied or to live in fear.

I really feel Clovis is on the near edge of a serious crime problem. I personally believe gangs and drugs are the two major problems that need to be addessed. Hand in hand with that, goes the problem of lack of police on patrol at any given hour of the day. One thing I have never understood is why there is such a shortage of street lights? Why does the community think that the city can provide all the services it does with insufficent funds? It takes money to run a household or company, and a city is no different. But no one seems to want to help pick up the bill for their own safety. slp
As I had written a Comment in our Clovis NEws Journal (Public Forum). Our Police Officers need an increase in Pay. The most recent Commission meeting showed progress in the area of wages. A firm will be hired to evaluate the wage structure of our City Staff. This column is on citizen participation, I realize that. Clovis and Curry county had a chance recently to participate in a tax increase that if I recall correctly amount to 25 CENTS per 100 Dollars. It is sad that the Citizens of Clovis thought so little of our City Workers that a meager 25 cents on a 100 Dollars was denied. Perhaps Clovis needs to see a few more great staff members go where they are paid better. I say no, and in a recent e-mail from our City Manager I received word of the pending wage study to possible increase of City Staff wages, or realign the wages. I appologise for the somewhat off-topic comment in this area. But we as Clovis residents can participate in more ways. To include paying a little better.Thank you.
