This idea was re-sparked when I found out about Art*o*mat®. However, it was originally inspired by the vast amount of great short films I've had the pleasure to discover. This idea brings to mind the theater tents in the early days of film, where people would pay a nickel or dime to sit in a temporary tent and watch a short film to escape from their depression era life.
Imagine a machine with a periscopic viewer for personal viewing, or a photo boothe sized machine where a few people can squeeze into it (a mini theater). You slip in a buck (a quarter for solo viewing) and choose a short film to watch. You could even sell DVD compilations for $5 that would spit out the front!
There are many great short films being produced that will never be seen by people who would enjoy them if we don't take advantage of emerging technology to create new distribution points.

While movieflix is a great idea, it's still extremely limiting at spreading movies. 1. It uses RealPlayer. 2. It uses RealPlayer! 3. The number of people who have internet access (let alone broadband) is still a minority. Having access in the "real world" will bring people to places like movieflix. This is more of an art showpiece vs. profit maker. Designed to have a "halo effect" (ha, a marketing buzz word of the moment) to draw people into the fold.
