Audio Books are gaining popularity because people are spending more time in their cars.
So why not distribute Audio Movies? So commuters driving to and from work can listen to the audio of their favorite movies. Think how often sound bites of movies are played. And what's cool is the audio recording is already there!
Scripts are written content just like books -- difference is that Audio Movies are narrarated by the "coolest" most entertaining readers.
Of course their are copywright and legal issues but think a new category could be born that could generate more revenue for the movie industry.

PBS produced and aired an audio version of the first Star Wars movie about 25 years ago. There is a huge library of old radio shows avaiable at rusc.com, including many radio theater dramas. Converting to audio only is not as simple as just taking the soundtrack. You have to add dialogue to describe events.
Movie companies will probably discover podcasting soon and offer promotional material in that format. They would probably prefer to tell just part of the story. As podcasting develops, there will probably be some creative people to offer updated forms of audio story-telling.
