This is more a query than a suggestion...there is a lot of concern about the quantity of bats killed by wind turbines. Is there some reason they don't just cover the turbine with a grate, like a home electric fan? Too much $$? Too much maintainance? Too ugly? Also, could they add some kind of high pitched sound that would repel the bats (but would not be audible to the rest of us)?

Simple: attach those animal whistle things (intended for cars) on the turbine blades. For those who don't know, I'm talking about those little cylindrical devices with the sticky pads under one side, people stick them to their cars' front bumpers, apparently the wind running through them produces a frequency that we can't hear but the animals can.

Yep the solution is definately to use ultrasound as this would warn the bats away if it was set to the right frequency. I had also though of the idea of using Ultrasound in Africa to repel mosquitos from the townships. Small mosquito repellors are available on my website <a href="http://www.duckout.com>duckout.comand by all accounts they do in fact work.

Oh so I cannot edit my previous postings! I have allready sugested smaller wind turbines that are banked together to maximize the energy efficiency asorbed from the wind/environment. These would then be less damaging to the bats, but would require other protections.

Save the bats, save the children of africa!

Cover it with a grate and the dummies will probably run into that. How about a nice, soft net that they would bounce off ? Don't forget the birds - same thing. No, the pitch on that net would have to be small, increasing it's area and intercepting the wind.

What is a bat's natural enemy ? Dracula hated light - I think that is the best way. For the birds - simulated cats.
